Ahead of the storm…
- Bring inside or secure loose objects, such as ladders and garden furniture, that could be blown away/ may smash into your windows or fence
- Close and securely fasten doors and windows, especially those on the windward side of the house and large doors, like garages have.
- Park vehicles in a garage, where possible; otherwise keep them clear of unsteady buildings, trees and fences
- Close and secure your loft doors properly, use bolts when necessary
- If the house is fitted with storm shutters over the windows, then ensure that these are fastened
- If your chimney stacks are tall and not in good condition, move beds away from areas directly below them.
- Ensure you have adequate insurance in place to protect your home and car, so you’re covered should you need to make a claim!
During the storm…
- Ideally, stay indoors where possible during tumultuous weather
- If you do need to go out, try not to walk too close to fences or trees
- Keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences – if these structures fail, they will collapse on this side
- Do not go outside to repair damage while the storm is still going on
- Slow down and be aware of side winds. Take extra care if you are towing or are driving a high-sided vehicle
- It is best not to drive unless really necessary – stormy weather can make your journey unpredictable
- Take extra care if you do have to drive, especially on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible.
Following the storm…
- Don’t touch any electrical cables that have been blown down or are still hanging and report any fallen telephone wires to the council ASAP.
- Do not walk too closely to trees, as they could have been weakened and may fall down
- Ensure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs.
